What Beats Is About
Summer 1994, Scotland. Johnno's family is moving him to a better neighbourhood while his closest friend Spanner is left behind. Before they part, the two decide on one last night at an illegal rave. The title comes directly from the law of that year: legislation in Britain criminalised gathering around music consisting of repetitive beats, and the statute really did put it that way. So dancing here is an illegal act. Brian Welsh shot it in black and white, and the screen changes for the first time when they reach the party.
