What The Rack Pack Is About
Two men turned snooker into one of the most watched things on British television in the 1980s: Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, burning through drink, fights and genius in roughly equal measure, and Steve 'The Nugget' Davis, so calm at the table that commentators ran out of ways to say it. Both are real, and the film tracks their rise through the television era. Brian Welsh's BBC picture is less about the rivalry than about the fight Higgins was having with his own life, with the manager Barry Hearn packaging and selling the sport on the other side of it. Luke Treadaway plays Higgins, Will Merrick plays Davis. It is funny for a long stretch, and then it stops being funny at all.
