What Before the Rains Is About
Set in southern India at the end of the nineteen thirties, the film is about three people caught in a web of forbidden attachment and dangerous secrets. A British spice planter falls in love with the woman who works in his house; the relation is not formed on equal terms, since he is both her employer and part of a colonial order. A young local man, meanwhile, is caught between his own ambitions and his family, his village and his past. The film does not use the colonial period as romantic decor; it looks at whose secret costs whose life. The account gives the woman not as an object of allure but as the person with most to lose. Linus Roache and Nandita Das appear in Santosh Sivan’s ninety eight minute film, completed in 2007.
