What The Terrorist Is About
Malli is nineteen when she is sent out from a camp to kill a leader by blowing herself up. Santosh Sivan makes the film’s most important decision at the outset: the country is not named, the organisation is not named, the cause is not named. With nothing to take a side about, the audience is left on the girl’s face. On the way she realises something in her own body has changed, and her resolve begins to give. Sivan, a cinematographer by trade, shot the film in fifteen days, largely in natural light and on a very small budget. Ayesha Dharker’s performance was awarded at Cairo. The starting point was the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
