What Being Frank: The Chris Sievey Story Is About
Steve Sullivan's 2019 British documentary is about the man behind Frank Sidebottom, the comedian who performed in a papier mâché head. Chris Sievey was a musician first; when his band failed to break through, the character he invented became unexpectedly known. The material is Sievey's own archive. He recorded everything for years, leaving boxes of home video, rehearsal tapes and drawings. The film uses them to show how the character was built. The narrative is not a celebration. What staying behind the mask did to Sievey's family and to his own work is described openly, and those close to him speak with both affection and hurt. Sievey died in 2010. Who it's for: those who like British comedy history and portraits built from archive. Who it's not for: viewers who have never heard of the character; the documentary passes over the context quickly.
