The film draws a portrait of Belarmino Fragoso, a veteran boxer in Lisbon nearing the end of his career. It uses a construction that mixes reportage with reenactment and gives the weaknesses of a former national featherweight champion together with the grim economics of boxing in the Portugal of the sixties. The account does not judge the man and does not ask for pity; it lets his own telling run uncut. Life outside the ring, money and growing older are the text’s real subject. Keeping the line between documentary and fiction deliberately blurred is the film’s method. Fernando Lopes’s seventy two minute Portuguese film was completed in 1964.
