What Before Your Eyes Is About
Miraz Bezar’s 2009 film opens on a May night on the road between Diyarbakır and Batman. Ten-year-old Gülistan and her younger brother Fırat witness the killing of their parents, and when their aunt disappears shortly afterwards the two children are left to the streets of Diyarbakır on their own. Bezar arranges no rescue and does not make the children charming; the camera stays at their height and records what they see, including how quickly a city stops noticing them. He wrote it with the journalist Evrim Alataş, and most of the cast are not professional actors. Screened in the national competition at Antalya as the first Turkish production in which every character speaks Kurdish, it was met there with nationalist protests.
