What Crimson Gold Is About
Hussein delivers pizza in Tehran and sees the distance between wealth and poverty door by door every day. Receipts from a jeweller found in a lost bag, then a shop that will not let him in, then a vast house he is invited into during a delivery: each repeats the same thing. The film shows what this ends in during its very first scene and spends the rest explaining how it got there. Abbas Kiarostami wrote it and Jafar Panahi directed. The lead is not a professional actor. It was banned in Iran, and Panahi was repeatedly imprisoned and barred from filmmaking in the years after.
