What Offside Is About
Women are barred from football stadiums in Iran. During the 2006 World Cup qualifier against Bahrain, several young women try to get in dressed as men; the ones who are caught are held in a wire pen just outside the stand. The match is a hundred metres away and all they can hear is the sound of it. Panahi shot the film on a real match day inside a real crowd. He does not make villains of the conscripts guarding them either; they are boys who would rather not be there. It never played in Iran.
