What Berlinguer: I Love You Is About
Known in Italian as Berlinguer ti voglio bene, Berlinguer, I Love You marked the feature debut of both director Giuseppe Bertolucci and star Roberto Benigni, who co-wrote the script with Bertolucci. It was shot in just 28 days in May and June 1977 in Prato, Tuscany. Freely adapted from a theatrical monologue, it follows Mario Cioni, a working class mason obsessed with Italian Communist Party leader Enrico Berlinguer, with a cast that includes Alida Valli and Carlo Monni. Who it's for: anyone curious about Roberto Benigni's raw, early comic style and 1970s Italian political satire. Who it's not for: viewers with no familiarity with the Italian Communist Party or Enrico Berlinguer, since some of the references may land flat without that context.
