What Five Cities Is About
Onur Ünlü's film sets five lives beside each other: a policeman, a shop worker, a teacher, a street vendor and an eleven year old. Aydın, newly posted to Istanbul, is a stranger to the city and to social life alike, and loneliness is his main trouble. He watches Mehtap, who works in a sweet shop in Beyoğlu, from a distance and gets nothing back; the others' unrequited attachments run along similar lines. The story does not stay inside Istanbul but reaches out to other cities. The style Ünlü would later be known for is already here: death always in frame, the humour dry, nobody able to stay where they want to be.
