What Between Us Is About
Mariana has only just arrived in New York from Colombia when her husband leaves, stranding her with two small children in a city whose language she does not speak. The way she finds to stay standing is the city’s recycling: she and the children collect cans and bottles for money. The film by Paola Mendoza and Gloria La Morte is not invention but is drawn from the arrival of Mendoza’s own mother in America, and Mendoza plays the lead herself. What it offers is not an appeal for pity but a woman working out a method inside an impossible situation. It runs eighty minutes, most of them spent working out how to get through the next day.
