What Beyond The Edge Is About
29 May 1953. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay become the first people to stand on the summit of Everest. The documentary retells that climb from the beginning: assembling the expedition, the Khumbu icefall, the camps, the oxygen sets, and the last day. Hillary's own words carry the narration. Some of what you see is real footage from the 1953 expedition and some is restaged in New Zealand and Nepal. Leanne Pooley directs, shot in 3D, with Chad Moffitt as Hillary and Sonam Sherpa as Tenzing Norgay. Ninety-three minutes. One of the film's concerns is this: who stepped onto the summit first was asked for years, and both men preferred to say they got there together.
