Beyond the Hill

Nusret takes his two sons up to his father Faik's farm in the hills. The elder boy, Zafer, is just out of military service and does not talk; the younger one will not stop stirring things up. Faik's grievance is plain: the nomads beyond the hill. Their goats get onto his land, they damage his flock, every misfortune comes from them. But nobody ever sees these nomads. A shot goes off. Who fired it is not clear, and the people on the farm decide to construct an enemy. After that it moves fast. Emin Alper directs the Turkish film; ninety minutes, with Tamer Levent as Faik and Reha Özcan as Nusret. It is Alper's first feature, shot in the Ermenek district of Karaman. At the 2012 Berlin Film Festival it took a special mention for best first feature.
