What Beyond the Rocks Is About
A young woman dutifully marries an older man of means and then, on an unhappy honeymoon, falls in love with a nobleman who once saved her life. Adapted from Elinor Glyn’s novel, it is the only film in which Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson appear together. It was counted as lost for decades, with a single minute of footage surviving. In 2000, cataloguers at the Nederlands Filmmuseum working through a huge nitrate collection left by a collector from Haarlem turned up the first two reels, and months of searching produced the rest. Restored, it was shown again after more than seventy-five years away.
