What Bharatham Is About
Raman and Gopi are brothers raised inside a tradition of classical music. When the elder one’s drinking starts to threaten his career, the whole weight falls on the younger, and Gopi has to carry both the stage and the family’s secret. Written by A. K. Lohithadas and directed by Sibi Malayil, the film reads the Ramayana from Bharata’s side: the brother who holds the house together in the absent elder’s place and shows his grief to nobody. The score leans heavily on Carnatic music. Mohanlal won the National Award for best actor for this, and K. J. Yesudas took best male playback singer.
