Big Brown Eyes

Eve Fallon, a manicurist, remembers everything she hears from her customers and has a mouth on her. That talent gets her hired at a newspaper as a police reporter. Her boyfriend, detective Danny Barr, is after a jewel theft ring; Eve gets into it by her own methods, and between them they stir up plenty of trouble. Directed by Raoul Walsh, the film runs comedy and crime at the same time, with the lines going back and forth without a pause. Cary Grant appears here in his fast, cocky pre-stardom mode, while the woman Joan Bennett plays is a step ahead of him in every scene. In seventy-seven minutes it works two genres at once. A typical but good example of the fast Hollywood pictures of the mid-thirties.
