Our Grand Despair

Seyfi Teoman's second and final feature adapts Barış Bıçakçı's 2004 novel, with director and novelist writing the screenplay together. Two old friends in their thirties, Ender and Çetin, share a house in Ankara, and the film watches their comfortable arrangement come quietly apart when a young woman, Nihal, moves in with them. It never delivers the explosion a love triangle promises; the conflict accumulates in glances, unfinished sentences, and who sits where in the living room. Even the narration describes what cannot happen rather than what does. The film premiered at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival in competition for the Golden Bear and took prizes at the 30th Istanbul Film Festival, including the special jury award. Teoman's death in 2012 turned this, in retrospect, into the second and last stop on a directing career that never got to continue. Who it's for: viewers who like films carried by silence, domestic detail, and feelings that stay incomplete, and anyone tracing the Turkish festival cinema of the early 2010s.
