BL Metamorphosis

A shy young woman who works in a bookshop and an elderly woman living alone come to know each other. What ties them together is a love of the same kind of manga. A friendship forms across the distance between their generations. The film does not present that friendship as an oddity; it shows that taking pleasure in the same thing is enough. For the older woman the meeting breaks her solitude; for the young one it is somewhere she can share what she likes. Their beginning to draw and to read together carries the account forward. The way tastes get looked down on is the point the film keeps returning to. Nobuko Miyamoto and Mana Ashida appear in Shunsuke Kariyama’s hundred and eighteen minute Japanese film, completed in 2022.
