Cherry Magic! THE MOVIE

This 2022 Japanese film continues the television series of the same name and starts where it left off. Adachi gained the ability to read minds because he reached thirty without a relationship; his relationship with his colleague Kurosawa is now established, but the ability has not gone away. In the film the pair have to manage at a distance when one of them is transferred out of the city. The story uses mind-reading not as a comic device but as a metaphor for trust in a relationship: knowing what the other person is thinking is no substitute for learning to trust them. It belongs to the Japanese queer romance tradition and follows its conventions, with a light tone and small-scale conflicts. Who it's for: people who watched the series and viewers who like Japanese romantic comedy. Who it's not for: anyone new to it; the film does not introduce its characters or their history.
