A Nice Indian Boy

Naveen is a doctor, the son of an Indian-American family, and he is about to introduce his fiancé Jay to his parents. The problem is not exactly that Jay is white: Jay was adopted by Indian parents, claims the culture with more enthusiasm than Naveen does, and that upsets the careful distance Naveen has kept from his family for years. Roshan Sethi adapted it from Madhuri Shekar's play. It does not quote the Hindi romance formula from outside but settles inside it, big wedding finale included. Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff play the couple; Sethi and Soni are partners in life. The film's real interest is not the lovers but the parents who do not know how to behave toward their son. Who it is for: viewers who like queer romantic comedy built on family acceptance. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the genre's conventions to be avoided, since the film uses them on purpose.
