What Black Cat Mansion Is About
A doctor moves into an old country mansion to care for his sick wife, and both of them begin seeing things. A monk tells them the history of the house: a jealous lord, a blind monk, what was done to the monk’s sister, and the cat that came after all of it. Nobuo Nakagawa tells the story in two periods and separates them visually, filming the present in blue-tinted black and white and the distant past in colour. It belongs to the ghost-cat strain of Japanese horror, and it is regarded as pointing directly towards Jigoku, which Nakagawa would make two years later.
