What Quick-draw Okatsu Is About
Okatsu is the adopted daughter of a master swordsman and is far more gifted with a blade than the man’s own son. The son’s habit of gambling plunges the family into trouble; he loses a great deal of money in a crooked dice game and cannot pay the debt. The father takes the blame on himself and is killed, and from there Okatsu sets out on a path of revenge. The film works with the mould of Japanese sword pictures of the late sixties and holds its fight scenes long. The account does not trouble itself with justifying revenge; it shows how closed the order standing against its heroine is. Junko Miyazono plays the lead in Nobuo Nakagawa’s eighty nine minute Japanese film, completed in 1969.
