What Blessed by Fire Is About
Esteban, now a journalist, hears that Alberto, who served beside him, has been taken to hospital after trying to kill himself. Sitting by the bed, he goes back to 1982 and to the islands Argentina calls the Malvinas and Britain the Falklands, where he was sent as a conscript barely out of school: the cold, the hunger, the lack of preparation, boys waiting in trenches. Tristán Bauer adapted it from Edgardo Esteban's book of the same name. The film is not interested in heroism but in what happened to the ones who came back, and in a country that turned away from its own soldiers. It took the Special Jury Prize at San Sebastián in 2005 and the Goya for best Spanish-language foreign film the following year.
