A suffocating summer in northern Argentina. An older woman, drunk as usual, falls among broken glasses beside a stagnant pool, and the film opens on that sound. Two related families move between a decaying country house and a modest place in town, the children run loose, a gun is lying around, and contempt for the servants is not concealed at all. Martel's first feature builds no plot. It records the sound of something rotting: thunder, ice in glasses, dogs, a distant accident on the radio.
