What Zama Is About
At the end of the eighteenth century, in a remote Spanish colony in South America, the officer Zama waits for a transfer to somewhere more prestigious. The letter never comes. Through that wait he absorbs small humiliations, gets caught in petty court politics and gives way steadily to lust and paranoia. In the end he looks for a way out by setting off to hunt a famous bandit. Adapting Antonio Di Benedetto’s novel, Lucrecia Martel builds the film not through plot but through sound and the texture of waiting. Daniel Giménez Cacho plays Zama.
