What The German Doctor Is About
Patagonia, 1960. A family driving to Bariloche falls in with a courteous, well-dressed German doctor who settles in the same town. Their small daughter Lilith is undersized for her age, and he takes an interest: growth hormone, measurements, careful drawings in a notebook. The mother's pregnancy with twins interests him too. The audience knows who he is well before the family does, and the film builds its dread entirely out of that gap. Puenzo, adapting her own novel, never raises her voice. She just shows how persuasive good manners are.
