A philosopher travels to Jerusalem to observe the Eichmann trial, and what she publishes afterwards sets both colleagues and friends against her. Margarethe von Trotta attempts to put the act of thinking at the centre, which is close to the hardest thing to film: much of the screen time is a woman smoking and saying nothing. The trial footage is genuine archive, which strengthens the film because no actor plays Eichmann. Since the idea in dispute is so often misread, the film keeps having to explain it and occasionally lectures. Barbara Sukowa mostly absorbs that risk.
