What Vision - From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen Is About
Margarethe von Trotta's film is about Hildegard of Bingen, the twelfth century Benedictine nun. Given to a monastery as a child, she became over the years a composer, a woman who worked with plants, wrote on medicine and recorded the images she saw. That is where the real tension of the film lies: a woman building her own authority inside a church run by men, and doing it without stepping outside her faith. Von Trotta paints her as neither a saint nor a rebel but as someone who understands politics and negotiates. Barbara Sukowa leads, in what is usually counted among her best work with this director. It was shot in real medieval cloisters.
