Blink Twice

Zoë Kravitz began writing the film in 2017 as Pussy Island and shot it under that name. It became Blink Twice only in January 2024. By her account the ratings body did not want the word on a poster, a billboard or a kiosk, and cinemas did not want it on a ticket. Her own research found the word was turning women away from the film. Filming began on 23 June 2022 in the Mexican states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Chanda Dancy’s score grew out of sound clips composer and director sent each other, with references running from gagaku to Stravinsky to Indonesian drumming to the Fantasy Island theme. Two days before release Amazon MGM published a warning that the film carries mature themes and depictions of violence including sexual violence, and linked to a page on its own site with the RAINN support line. Going past the age rating that way is unusual. The BBFC gives the same list for its 15 certificate: sexual violence, strong bloody violence, threat, language and drug misuse. A good fit if you treat that warning, which names what Frida cannot remember before the film gets there, as a courtesy rather than a spoiler. Not for anyone who would rather not watch what that list names; the narrative puts it at the centre.
