What Blue Black Permanent Is About
In Edinburgh in the nineties, Barbara is thinking about her mother Greta, who was a poet, and about her death. The account runs in two times at once: on one side her own childhood memories, on the other stories reaching back to her mother’s childhood. The pull of the sea follows the women of the same family across three generations. The film moves between Edinburgh and the Orkney islands and builds the story not in a straight line but with the disorder of remembering itself. Margaret Tait made this film at seventy four; it was her only feature. Celia Imrie plays the lead in the eighty six minute Scottish film.
