Bobi Wine: The People's President

Robert Kyagulanyi became one of Uganda's most listened-to musicians under the name Bobi Wine. Then he was elected to parliament, and in 2021 he ran for president. Facing him was Yoweri Museveni, in power for thirty-five years. During the campaign Bobi Wine was arrested repeatedly, his rallies were broken up, his supporters were killed in the streets, and he was placed under house arrest. Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world and that population was behind him. The documentary by Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp was filmed over five years. Bwayo was shot in the face and arrested during the shoot; the film was completed under those conditions. At the centre of the narrative is not only the campaign but the decision being weighed between Bobi Wine and his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi: when to stop. The film was nominated for the best documentary Oscar in 2024. Who it's for: Viewers of political documentary, narratives about African politics, and direct filming methods. Who it's not for: The images of violence are direct and harsh. The narrative also proceeds from one side's view.
