What Knock Down the House Is About
The documentary follows four women running against their party's incumbents in the 2018 American primaries: Paula Jean Swearengin, a miner's daughter in West Virginia, Amy Vilela in Nevada, Cori Bush in Missouri and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, working as a bartender in New York. All four run without corporate money, on volunteers and door-knocking. Rachel Lears put the camera inside the campaigns and shot without knowing the outcome; in the end three lose and one wins, and the film treats the losers with the same seriousness. Its best passages are not the victory but the preparation: house meetings, rehearsed speeches, household budgets. It took the audience award at Sundance and Netflix bought it for a record sum. Who it is for: viewers interested in political documentary and grassroots campaigning. Who it is not for: anyone expecting neutrality, since the film stands with the candidates.
