What American Movie Is About

A man in Wisconsin has been trying to finish a horror film for years, and the documentary follows the attempt without ever mocking it. That is its hardest balance: Mark Borchardt is funny and his plans are not realistic, yet Chris Smith refuses to hand the audience someone to laugh at. The people around him, especially his elderly uncle and his friend Mike, carry the story somewhere else entirely. The sections about raising money, persuading relatives and shooting the same shot again and again show the unromantic face of making films.
