Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal

Rick Singer advises wealthy families on college admissions. What he offers is plain: pay the test proctor and the answers get corrected, or place the child on a university team in a sport they have never played using a fabricated file. The FBI is listening to the phones. The subject is not the crime but the system already being purchasable. At the documentary's sharpest point an expert says it: a family that donates a building and gets its child admitted is acting legally, what Singer did was illegal, and the difference is method, not outcome. The form rests on an unusual choice. Singer's phone calls are taken verbatim from the FBI recordings and restaged with actors; Matthew Modine plays Singer adding nothing, speaking only the sentences in the transcripts. So what you watch looks like fiction while every line rests on a document. The director is Chris Smith, who also made the Fyre and Wham! documentaries in these years and is known for building narrative out of archive material. It was released on Netflix in 2021.
