The documentary takes place almost entirely in one room with one man. Michael Ruppert, a former Los Angeles police officer turned independent reporter, sits in front of the camera and explains that oil, the economy and agriculture are all going to fail at once. Having called the 2008 crisis in advance gives him authority, and the film neither confirms nor challenges him, it simply lets him talk. The years since have undone parts of his forecast, particularly the imminent end of oil. Chris Smith's portrait survives as an uncomfortable record of a man isolated by his own prophecy. Ruppert died in 2014.
