Bolivia

Adrián Caetano's 2001 Argentine film follows Freddy, who comes to Buenos Aires to work from Bolivia after the coca fields are destroyed. He finds a job at the grill of a small restaurant; the customers and those around him constantly remind him where he is from. The film was shot in sixteen millimetre black and white and takes place almost entirely in one restaurant. Caetano shows racism not through large events but through everyday sentences: a joke, a look, an argument over a bill. That accumulation makes the ending inevitable. Most of the cast are not professionals. It took an award in the Critics' Week section at Cannes. The film is short and harsh. Who it's for: viewers interested in Argentine independent cinema and films about migration. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a hopeful close, or distressed by racist language relayed directly.
