The Lost Brother

Adrián Caetano's 2017 Argentine film is adapted from Carlos Busqued's novel. Cetarti has lost his job, cares about nothing and spends his days watching documentaries on television. When news comes that his mother and brother have been shot he travels from Buenos Aires to a small town in Chaco province. There he meets a man named Duarte who wants the insurance money, and is drawn steadily into his dark business. The film takes its tension from atmosphere rather than plot: the heat of the north, the empty town and nobody caring about anything. Cetarti's indifference is at the centre and lifts the film out of being a familiar crime story. Leonardo Sbaraglia and Daniel Hendler star. Who it's for: viewers who like slow crime drama and Argentine cinema. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach harsh violence and cruelty to animals.
