What Boy 23: The Forgotten Boys of Brazil Is About
Belisario Franca's documentary follows the research of the historian Sidney Aguilar. It begins with the discovery of bricks stamped with swastikas in the interior of São Paulo. Following the trail turns up an episode from the 1930s: fifty Black boys taken from an orphanage in Rio de Janeiro were brought to that farm, referred to by numbers and put to forced labour. The family who owned the farm belonged to the country's political and economic elite and made no secret of their pro-Nazi views. The film finds some of the survivors and lets them speak. It recounts a documented case and opens a chapter that went undiscussed in Brazil for a long time.
