What Britain and the Blitz Is About
From September 1940 the German air force bombed London and other British cities for months. The documentary gives that period through the accounts of people who lived through those days and through colourised archive footage. Nights spent in underground stations, wrecked streets, children evacuated, fire crews. The death toll runs into the tens of thousands. Ella Wright's production follows the familiar shape of the archive documentary: footage, testimony, period sound. Colourisation is a contested method; it brings the image closer while also altering what it was. The strongest thing in the film is not the figures but what individual people remember: where they were on which night, whom they lost, what they saw in the morning.
