Broken Vein

Yannis Economides's 2025 Greek film follows Thomas, a businessman drowning in debt. A loan shark raises the pressure and he is days from losing his house; he sets in motion a plan he believes is flawless. The film is concerned not with whether the plan works but with people failing to hold. Economides is a director who works through dialogue; the characters shout over and interrupt one another and the talking scenes run long. The tension comes from that pressure rather than from action. Vasilis Bisbikis leads. The images are cold, the spaces narrow and the framing often tight on faces. As in the director's earlier films, the economic condition of Greece is made felt without being discussed directly. Who it's for: those who like Greek cinema and harsh dialogue drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a calm watch; shouting and swearing run heavy throughout.
