What Brother and Sister Is About
Mikio Naruse’s 1953 film comes from a story by Saisei Muro. Mon, the eldest daughter of a poor rural family, returns from Tokyo pregnant by a student, and the scandal that follows threatens the marriage prospects of her younger sister San as much as it does anything of Mon’s own. Inokichi, the family’s short-tempered eldest son, appoints himself the one who will restore order, and what he does is hard to watch. Naruse neither condemns the violence nor turns it into a lesson; he presents the punishment handed to a woman who came home as something the household’s own poverty produces. Machiko Kyo plays Mon. The same story had already been filmed in the 1930s by Sotoji Kimura.
