Wittaya Jetapai What Brother of the Year Is About
Witthaya Thongyooyong's 2018 Thai film follows the relationship between Jane, who does everything around the house, and her brother Chut, who does nothing. When Jane becomes involved with a Japanese colleague, Chut has to look after himself; but the real matter is not his learning to cook, it is his giving up control over his sister's life. The comedy rests on Sunny Suwanmethanon's exaggerated idleness, while the story moves somewhere more serious in the second half: the bond between siblings is also something that constrains each of their lives. It was a large commercial success in Thailand. Its weakness is an ending that is too emotional and explains too much. Who it's for: viewers who like Thai comedy and family films about siblings. Who it's not for: anyone wanting restrained humour, or who will find the melodramatic ending excessive.
