Burn Burn Burn

Chanya Button's 2016 British film follows two women in their late twenties on a journey to scatter a friend's ashes. Before he died, Dan recorded video messages; at each stop they watch one, and he tells them where to go and what to do there, along the way telling them truths they would rather not hear. Seph and Alex's own lives are close to falling apart: one is running from her relationship, the other is struggling with work and a parent. The film uses the road movie shape for comedy but also shows the angry, embarrassing side of grief. The tone starts light and grows steadily more serious. Who it's for: viewers who like British independent comedy drama and road movies. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach grief and cancer; the film opens on a joke but that is its subject.
