What Love You to the Stars and Back Is About
Antoinette Jadaone's 2017 Filipino film follows a road trip taken by Mika, who believes she is looking for aliens, and Caloy, who joins her along the way. Mika cannot cope with her mother's death and the belief is a form of escape; Caloy has stopped his cancer treatment and is preparing his own farewell. What Jadaone does is recognise the templates of Filipino romantic comedy and change them from inside: the film begins funny and arrives, without giving up its humour, somewhere grieving. The rapport between Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia is convincing. Its limit is that some stops on the road contribute little to the story and the middle section runs long. Who it's for: viewers who like Filipino cinema and romantic drama in road-movie form. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding subjects of illness and death, or wanting a tightly edited story.
