Never Not Love You

Antoinette Jadaone's 2018 Filipino film follows a young couple trying to build a life together. Joanne and Gio meet at university; career opportunities then take them to different countries and the relationship is tested across that distance. What makes it interesting is how it makes the economic ground of romance visible. That working abroad is nearly an obligatory option in the Philippines, that families depend on remittances, and the pressure migration puts on relationships are all directly inside the narrative. Nadine Lustre and James Reid were a well-known screen pairing at the time and the film was built on that popularity. Against that, the script does not steer toward a classic romantic close; the possibility of separation stays open to the end. Who it's for: those who like contemporary Filipino romantic drama and narratives about migration. Who it's not for: viewers who want a happy ending guaranteed; the film promises none.
