Fan Girl

Jane is sixteen and a fan of Paulo Avelino. Hanging around a shoot, she hides in the back of a truck and finds herself at the actor's isolated house. Instead of leaving she chooses to stay; she is going to spend a night with the man she has imagined. As the night goes on, Avelino's drunk, angry and dangerous self emerges. Jane's adoration collapses, and getting out of the house is not simple either. Antoinette Jadaone takes aim at fan culture directly. Paulo Avelino plays a fictional version of himself under his own name, a choice that brings the film uncomfortably close to the real. The narrative is a two-hander and takes place almost entirely in one location. Charlie Dizon plays Jane. The image is handheld, dark and tightly framed. Who it's for: Viewers who like thrillers built on celebrity culture, two-hander narratives, and Filipino independent cinema. Who it's not for: The violence and harassment are direct, and because they involve a minor the film is heavy to watch. There is no consoling close.
