Seven Sundays

The Bonifacio siblings come back together after years apart when they learn their father has been diagnosed with cancer. He asks them for seven Sundays: seven consecutive weeks, all of them together. Whatever has gone unsaid between them surfaces across those Sundays. Directed by Cathy Garcia-Sampana, credited on the film as Cathy Garcia-Molina, this Star Cinema production works the familiar shapes of Filipino family melodrama: crowded tables, old accounts, fights and reconciliations. Aga Muhlach, Dingdong Dantes, Cristine Reyes and Enrique Gil play the siblings, with Ronaldo Valdez as the father. It opened on 11 October 2017, took ten million pesos on its first day, and finished at 271 million pesos, the seventh highest-grossing Filipino film of the year. Who it's for: Viewers who like family drama, sibling reckonings and films that are emotionally direct. Who it's not for: The feeling is laid on thick and the resolutions are predictable, which is too much for anyone wanting restraint.
