My Amnesia Girl

Cathy Garcia-Sampana's 2010 Filipino film follows Apollo, who left his fiancée on their wedding day three years earlier. As his friends begin to marry he questions his own flight; then he meets Irene again and she does not recognise him. The setup rests on amnesia. Apollo sees it as a second chance and tries to start again; the narrative keeps questioning whether that is honest and holds the viewer in that discomfort. John Lloyd Cruz and Toni Gonzaga lead and their rapport is the film's support. The tone sits between comedy and drama; the narrative follows the template of Filipino romantic comedy but leaves the woman's decision open until the end. Who it's for: those who like Filipino romantic comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting amnesia treated realistically; the film uses it purely as a plot device.
