Crazy Beautiful You

Mae Cruz-Alviar's 2015 Filipino film follows the relationship between Jackie, an undisciplined young woman sent by her father to a medical mission camp, and Kiko, whom she meets there. She is running from her family; he has stayed in the mountain village and carries his own responsibilities. The film stays inside the template of teen romance but does not hide the class difference between them: Jackie's rebellion is a luxury, Kiko's responsibility a necessity. The rapport between Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla was the source of its commercial strength. Its weakness is covering the question of class at the end with a romantic resolution, and softening the father too easily. Who it's for: viewers who like Filipino teen romance and follow the popular pairing. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a story outside the template, or hoping the question of class is taken seriously.
